On approximation of homeomorphisms of a Cantor set

We continue to study topological properties of the group Homeo(X) of all homeomorphisms of a Cantor set X with respect to the uniform topology τ , which was started in [B-K 1], [B-D-K 1; 2], [B-D-M], and [M]. We prove that the set of periodic homeomorphisms is τ -dense in Homeo(X) and deduce from this result that the topological group (Homeo(X), τ) has the Rokhlin property, i.e., there exists a...

The Rokhlin lemma for homeomorphisms of a Cantor set

For a Cantor set X, let Homeo(X) denote the group of all homeo-morphisms of X. The main result of this note is the following theorem. Several corollaries of this result are given. In particular, it is proved that for any aperiodic T ∈ Homeo(X) the set of all homeomorphisms conjugate to T is dense in the set of aperiodic homeomorphisms. 0. Introduction. One of the most useful results in ergodic ...

A Bratteli Diagram for Commuting Homeomorphisms of the Cantor Set

This paper presents a construction of a sequence of Kakutani-Rohlin Towers and a corresponding simple Bratteli Diagram, B, for a general minimal aperiodic Z d action on a Cantor Set, X, with d 2. This is applied to the description of the orbit structure and to the calculation of the ordered group of coinvariants. For each minimal continuous Z d action on X there is a minimal continuous Z action...

Geodesic laminations revisited

The Bratteli diagram is an infinite graph which reflects the structure of projections in a C∗-algebra. We prove that every strictly ergodic unimodular Bratteli diagram of rank 2g + m − 1 gives rise to a minimal geodesic lamination with the m-component principal region on a surface of genus g ≥ 1. The proof is based on the Morse theory of the recurrent geodesics on the hyperbolic surfaces.

Geodesic laminations and noncommutative geometry

Measured geodesic laminations is a remarkable abstraction (due to W. P. Thurston) of many otherwise unrelated phenomena occurring in differential geometry, complex analysis and geometric topology. In this article we focus on connections of geodesic laminations with the inductive limits of finite-dimensional semi-simple C∗-algebras (AF C∗-algebras). Our main result is a bijection between combina...
